Have you ever known someone suffering from osteoporosis? Osteoporosis can have life-threatening consequences. In the elderly, it’s a fall that’s usually the turning point and lands them in a nursing home. “What makes the bones weak?” Osteoporosis is when the body is unable to regenerate enough new bone cells. Bones soften and weaken. Quiz time! The number of bones in the adult human body is, a, 152, b, 206, or c, 370? The answer? B: 206. There are 206 bones in the adult human’s body and 350 in the infant. Bones fuse together while a person grows.

“Can’t I just take Boniva?” Prescription medications do stop bone loss, so they sound like the key, but there’s a problem. Boniva functions by killing osteoclasts. Osteoclasts are needed! They are bone cells that destroy and remove old bone to make room for new strong bone in its place. When osteoclasts are not present to remove old bone, the bones become dense and weak, not strong! Wow! Let’s rule out medicine. What about estrogen-replacement therapy? Estrogen inhibits osteoclasts from breaking down your bone; but cannot rebuild bone! So what is the solution for strong bones if I don’t want to take medicine?

The natural solution includes, number one, plenty of vitamin D via sunshine and food and supplements with D3, like eggs. Two, get enough calcium. Quiz time! The best source of calcium is a cow’s milk. The answer, false. Why? Because it is an animal protein, cow’s milk is rich in phosphorous. Phosphorous turns blood acidic. To neutralize the blood, the body takes calcium out of of the bones and adds it into the bloodstream. If not from calcium, then what? Choices are numerous, and include sesame seeds. Sesame paste spread on pita bread or served as a dressing for falafel (chick pea balls) is delicious.

Number three, engage in 30 minutes per day of weight bearing exercise. Number four, ensure the proper functioning of your nervous system. Nervous system? Yes. Regeneration of bone cells occurs every 120 days and is controlled by the nervous system. When the nervous system is stressed, cell regeneration does not properly occur. What stresses the nerves? Pressure upon the nerves caused by a spinal misalignment. It’s called a subluxation, a condition in which a spinal segment is out of alignment with the adjacent segment. Nerves, which branch off of the spinal cord, no longer properly work. Quiz time! Most bone growth happens by the age of, A, 20, B, 30, C, 40. The answer is A, 20. Yes. It is quite early. Osteoporosis prevention should thus begin at an early age for both women and men.

Do you have a friend or loved one suffering from osteoporosis? Ask your chiropractor for a copy of osteoporosis information to pass along. You can help change someone’s like. What could feel better than that? “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” -Thomas Edison.
